On Good Days

Sometimes, when I'm not worrying about other things, I like to fall into this for a day

Big Stuff

Oh right, I was going to update about that glass project. I haven't, for two very good reasons.

One, I've just been busy. I had an interview to prepare for, and apparently I did well, because I got the internship! Huge step in the right direction :) So for the next three months I'll be interning part time at Wolsak and Wynn, publisher of Canadian poetry and non-fiction. They seemed familiar when the posting came up, and it's because at different points I have written reviews of some of their publications, and wanted to submit to them as well. Of course, due to lack of confidence, I never did. Also, it's in Hamilton! And within walking distance of Willie's apartment, so it'll be nice to spend more time with him before he goes off to Germany for a couple of months (le sigh).

I also did a portrait sitting with Jon Tobin! He took this picture. Look! It's me! With art!

The second reason is that I've scrapped the project. I have a better idea anyway :) I'll get back to the glass at some point, but... I don't know when.

LIVE BROADCAST!

I figured the only way I can figure this out is by going through it a step at a time. So why not do it live! First, I have a box of stuff???

I also have a variety of frames to choose from!

I chose this one, as the glass was still in as a size reference, and because it was fairly easy to get in and out of the frame. Yay!

And I've got my fancy glass marked!

I've got my oil cutter and my sharpie

I've got my otha toolz

So I've got a piece of glass cut that's a liiittle bit smaller than the original piece of glass. I've decided to keep it simple and cut a pattern into a single piece rather than mixing colours at this point. I'm very rusty.

First cut went well. The oil cutter still works! It's not corroded or anything.

Second cut is on an angle! Oooo, fancy. It took me a while to learn how to do that, so I'M impressed.

Cutting's done! Since the oil cutter leaves some residue on the edges, I've wiped them clean with a disposable rag. The spiders also noticed I haven't done this in a while, and built a little nest in the disposable rag tube. Even more of a comment on their part, it's been empty for some time.

Next, taping the edges with copper tape. This is the part for which I get a chair and put on an episode of Buffy. Check back later.

Yay tape! And this.. thing... with which you... flatten? the tape...

Bevel King? I've heard it called something else that I now forget.

Hey look! I don't like it. Maybe it'll look better once it's soldered. I'm doing that tomorrow. It's the scary part...

Oh my! So I'm applying for a part time internship, no big deal, I do it all the time. But suddenly I recognize this company and realize I've written reviews for them before! THEY MIGHT EVEN KNOW WHO I AM.

This is eerie. High hopes.

The Elders of the Internet?

They know who you are.

Don't break it, guys. This is serious stuff.

In Other Other News

I attribute most of my emotional difficulties in the past two weeks to constant watching of the sixth season of Buffy. Way to not have a single pure and happy moment in the entire season.

Oh, except this. I'll cling to that one.

Half-size Afghan/Bluejay Costume

It's been quite some time since I finished anything. But Christmas happened, and this one was big!

Dante especially likes it when I make larger things, as he gets to snuggle with them.
At this point I was finished, but didn't feel like hiding all the tiny bits coming out of some of the edges, so I decided to add tassels instead!
Tassels are finicky and take hours and hours.
But I think, in the end, my decision was the right one. So that's my second last Christmas present! The next one should only take a day, so I can likely get that done tomorrow. Oh wait I have to be at work at 2:00 for some sort of skills training, so maybe I'll have to wait until Sunday. Then I get a bunch of time off, which will be wonderful for getting this application done.

In other news, I have three references! Yay! Also spoke with artist Jon Tobin (conveniently also my uncle) who not only wants to schedule a sitting for another portrait, but asked if I wanted to take some drawing classes as well! I think I just might. And then use that knowledge in embroidery, since apparently I can do that pretty well. Well, I can do Beartato's face at least.

Friday the 13th!

I celebrated by forgetting my work shoes and having to stand in heels for what thankfully only ended up being seven hours.

On the plus side, I had my multitasking skills complimented a LOT.

And I heard back from one of my references! So that's... one...

I'm a Little Overworked This Week(end)

My not going to school this semester has finally taken effect on my work schedule, so I've worked evenings all weekend. Evenings work better with my sleep schedule, so that's great, but really cut into my everything schedule. I've been trying to get started on my application to the publishing program at Simon Fraser, but the only time I have to work on it is at one in the morning, or ten in the morning, when I'm invariably exhausted.

I had Bronwyn look over my statement of purpose and apparently it's ok though, so maybe I can actually get those reference packages out this week. Bah!

And then THIS sorry excuse for a poached egg. The yolk had broken before it even hit the water :(

Nevertheless, I got some terrific Christmas presents from Katherine of Quinn Street fame!

I will definitely be making this one first.

Oh hey, an update on my own Christmas gifts I guess: bacon vodka is terrific with orange juice, but only ok with anything else (we tried coffee and ceasars). A bit greasy and salty on its own, but probably worth a second batch sometime soon. And my afghan will have to be a lapghan if I want to get it sent out by Valentine's Day.

Oh shoot that's coming up soon.
